BCIT’s School of Transportation is
seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Shop Maintenance
Technician. Responds to requests and trouble calls, completes work orders
and provides quality service to the Heavy Equipment, Commercial Transport, Railway
and Industrial Material Handling Logistics staff and students. Operates and
maintains a variety of wheeled, railway and tracked equipment, carries out
scheduled inspections, maintenance and repairs to machinery, equipment, and
the railway lab. Coordinates the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) program,
makes emergency repairs to a variety of equipment, and identifies
requirements to outsource to external vendors. Takes functional direction
from the Department Heads and Workshop Tool room Supervisor.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responds to work
requests and trouble calls, identifies problems and takes corrective
action to fix machinery and equipment including preliminary
troubleshooting on a variety of machines and equipment, including
alternator testers, starter testers, battery load testers,
refrigeration units, electrical training aids, hydraulic training aids
and components, and driveline training aids and components.
- Operates, moves, or
removes old machinery and equipment, adapts older machinery and
equipment to new components and parts, relocates machinery and
equipment, and installs and commissions new machinery and equipment.
- Operates a variety of
tracked, wheeled and railway equipment to a high degree of safety
within compounds and on campus property. Equipment includes; Trucks,
Railcar Mover, and heavy-duty machines.
- Repairs and maintains
forklifts.
- Recommends priorities
and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance Plan, including
items that require inspection and maintenance for regulatory reasons.
The Preventative Maintenance & plan duties include but are not
limited to: inspecting, cleaning, greasing, lubricating, identifying
deficiencies, and taking corrective action and reporting findings to
the supervisor.
- Performs regular
inspections on locomotives, rail car movers, tracks and freight cars.
- Performs regular
railyard maintenance, duties include but not limited to switch
maintenance, track maintenance, vegetation control, and ensuring
proper signage is in place.
- Maintains work logs and
inspection records as required to meet regulatory compliance.
- Undertakes related
duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Definition:

Education:
- Grade 12 plus
completion of two years post-secondary education in a relevant trades
program.
License(s)/Certifications(s):
- Valid BC Driver’s
License
- Forklift Operators
certification
- Certified in propane
cylinder filing
The successful candidate will be required to complete and maintain currency
in the following courses/training:
- Track Inspection
Training
- Industrial Railway
(non-main track) Crew Safety Training
Experience:
- Two years general
experience plus two years directly related experience working with,
and around, mechanical and/or large, heavy duty or railway equipment
- Experience in operating
heavy equipment and overhead cranes
- Lead hand, shift
supervisor or shop coordinator experience is required
