Chevron Phillips Chemical has recently announced that they plan to expand its alpha olefins business with another world-scale unite to produce 1-hexene with a startup data of 2023. The new unit will be located in Old Ocean, Texas, and will have a capacity of 266 KTA.

This project anticipates the creation of more than 600 construction jobs as well as over 50 full-time positions. As the price-earnings ratio increases around the globe, projects such as this one demonstrates the company’s commitment to addressing customer needs and expanding job creation.

What is 1-Hexene?

In the oil and gas industry, 1-hexene is an important component when it comes to the production of PE (high-performance polyethylene). PE is a plastic resin used in producing film and rigid containers for everyday products such as food packaging and pharmaceuticals.

This new 1-hexene unit will use the latest in Chevron Phillips Chemical’s technology to produce pure comonomer-grade 1-hexene from ethylene in a way that maximizes production and reduces emissions - which is all part of the company’s sustainability strategy.

Currently, Chevron Phillips Chemical operates two alpha-olefin units with the world’s largest 1-hexene unit located at its Cedar Bayou plant in Baytown, Texas. The new unit will be located in Old Ocean, Texas, near the company’s Sweeny facility and will be able to provide increased production as well as the flexibility to meet the demand created by the company’s growing customer base.
