Sawyer and Crane Operator - EOIII

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Salary: $35.810 (Hourly) / $74,771.280 (Annually).

Position: Full-time

Job Details

  • Log pick up and delivery of logs of various sizes for disposal or for processing (both 5-ton and 2-ton trucks).
  • Operate 5-ton tandem axle flat deck truck with Crane and 2-ton truck with dump box and crane.
  • Drive a truck and pull trailers of various sizes.
  • Load securement.
  • Experience with rigging for lifting/lowering logs.
  • Operate log processing machinery and equipment, such as sawmills, debarkers, and planers, to convert logs into dimensional lumber.
  • Safely load and unload logs onto processing equipment using appropriate tools and machinery.
  • Monitor and adjust machinery settings to ensure accurate cutting, sizing, and shaping of logs into dimensional lumber according to specifications.
  • Inspect logs for defects, such as knots, rot, or insect damage, and make necessary adjustments to equipment to minimize waste and maximize quality.
  • Maintain an organized work area, including regular maintenance and cleaning of machinery and equipment.
  • Operate 5-ton tandem axle truck with crane and trailer for delivery and take down of City events.
  • Load and unload tables on to tandem axle truck for events as needed.
  • Clear operational yard parking lot of snow during winter months and spring clean up as needed.
  • Load tandems with snow.
  • Operate skid steer or front end loaders for snow removal operation.
  • Drive tandems to deliver snow to snow dump.

Qualifications

  • Completion of grade 10 supplemented by two years of experience in the operation of equipment assigned to the position or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Alberta Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with air brake certificate, including eligibility to obtain a City driver’s permit is required.
  • Standard First Aid, WHMIS Training.
  • Proven experience as an equipment operator, preferably in log processing or a related field.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong knowledge of log processing machinery and equipment, including sawmills, debarkers, and planers.
  • Proficient in operating and maintaining log processing equipment, with a focus on safety and efficiency.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to handle logs and operate machinery.
  • Physical stamina and ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting heavy logs and standing for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify defects or irregularities in logs.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to log processing and equipment operation.
  • Flexibility to work in varying weather conditions and adapt to changing work demands.

Experience

  • Experience driving 5-ton vehicles flatbed and dump box.
  • Experience towing trailers.
  • Crane use.
  • Experience rigging.
  • Loader operation.
  • Skid steer operation.
  • Experience with ice and snow.
  • Load securement.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Lubricate and assist in repairing assigned equipment.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Tools & Equipment

  • Operate heavy-duty City construction and maintenance equipment, including graders, heavy-duty tractors, earthmoving units, soil compactors, backhoes, front-end loaders, skid steer, truck-mounted cranes, and various equipment.
