Reporting to the Supervisor of Facilities (Building Services), the Mechanical Serviceperson is responsible for mechanical, HVAC and electrical services within the Community Services Department and other Town-owned facilities and parks.


The Successful Candidate will be required to:

  • Maintain the Town of Whitby’s infrastructure and support equipment through, installation, service, operating, troubleshooting, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of Facility HVAC Air distribution systems, HVAC Piping and Pumps, Central Heating Equipment, Central Cooling Equipment, Central HVAC Equipment, Decentralized HVAC Equipment and Building Automation Systems.
  • Provide equipment selection, sizing, installation of new and retrofit HVAC equipment including testing and balancing of related building systems.;
  • Respond to preventative maintenance work orders, including equipment start-ups, shutdowns, and commissioning;
  • Perform on-call and after hours emergency response to maintenance and equipment repair requests.
  • Read and prepare drawings, schematics and load calculations
  • Perform technical infrastructure and equipment audits.
  • Demonstrate safe working practices and procedures.
  • Maintain mechanical services activity files and reports using a software tracking system;
  • Periodically attend trade seminars/courses, safety awareness courses and software training and updates;
  • Other duties as assigned

What You Bring To Our Team

  • Minimum grade 12 education combined with the successful completion of a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics apprenticeship;
  • Certification as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (313A)
  • Gas Technician 1 Certificate and an Ozone Depletion Prevention Certificate, or the ability to obtain:
  • experience as a journeyperson;
  • Working at Heights certification;
  • Strong technical, research, analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Well-developed interpersonal and public relations skills;
  • Knowledge and understanding of WHIMIS, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Refrigeration B52-99 and Natural Gas Code (B149.1-15);
  • Knowledge of Technical Standards and Safety regulations;
  • The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form in a clear and concise manner;
  • Knowledge of building automation including control wiring, operation, troubleshooting and installation;
  • Knowledge of industrial refrigeration including operation of ice rink refrigeration plants;
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook);
  • be familiar and proficient with mechanical services software applications;
  • the ability to work independently, at times with minimal supervision, and as part of a team;
  • A valid class G driver’s licence; and
  • a valid criminal record checks to work with vulnerable individuals is required.
