Building Operator

Openings: Up to 4 permanent 

Position: Full-time  

Salary: $35.129 - $36.375 (Hourly)  

Hours of Work: 

  • 40 hours per week
  • Monday - Sunday
Job Details

  • Perform inspections and maintenance of heating and boiler plants, pressure vessels and associated piping as systems as per the Provincial Boilers Act (ABSA) Regulations
  • Perform maintenance and repair on mechanical systems and assist various repairs as directed by the supervisor
  • Ensure records are maintained and updated as per ABSA and City of Edmonton requirements
  • Change HVAC filters and other related maintenance activities as required
  • Assist and coordinate contractors and Facility Maintenance Services trades staff as required
  • Perform inspection and minor maintenance of process equipment in residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial environments
  • Use various Building Automation Systems to monitor and troubleshoot various facilities
  • Complete inspections of various facilities to meet the city’s responsibility of ensuring our facilities are maintained at an acceptable level and as per governing regulations
  • Liaise with Facility Maintenance Services staff, Contractors, and tenant groups
  • Assist with the completion of inspection reports
  • Ensure that practices and facility operations comply with OH&S regulations and Enviso policies as directed by the supervisor
  • Complete safety inspections of city facilities
  • Assist with the annual review and audits of safety programs
  • Assist in the development of safe work practices, safety programs, and SOPs
  • Perform other related duties as required 

Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate recognized by the Alberta Boiler Association
  • Completion of Grade 12 or General Equivalency equivalent*
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license or provincial equivalent. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years experience as a Building Operator with an emphasis on operations and maintenance of heating plants and HVAC systems

Knowledge & Skills

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in large heating boiler operations and in other HVAC systems
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions to be taken during inspections and maintenance
  • Highly developed interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with a variety of individuals
  • Able to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job related task and safety requirements
  • Must be proficient with using Google applications (Gmail, calendar, etc)
  • Must be comfortable using a tablet to update records and log information
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of hand tools
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures, indoors and outdoors, from extension and step ladders at considerable heights, on facility rooftops, and in confined spaces
  • Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with the City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business auto insurance
