What Komat Drilling is Hiring for:

The primary duties of the Derrickhand is maintaining proper drilling fluid characteristics, the rate of fluid circulation, mud handling equipment, and the preventative maintenance program. Additionally the Derrickhand is responsible for the work done above the rig floor. The Derrickhand must be able to identify and avoid potential problems and is responsible for the operations of the pumps, moving the rig, setting up and tearing down the rig, as well as assists in training junior crew members.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • With instruction from the Driller and Manager, condition the drilling fluid and maintains mud pumps
  • Ensure preventative maintenance is performed on all equipment
  • Perform inspections for proper working condition as required, for the following (but not limited to): crown block, shale shaker, mud agitators, degasser, mud mixing, all low-pressure valves in mud system, all hoses and connectors, trash pumps, etc.
  • Check inventory and critical spares as required
  • Check and inspect the derrick as required, lights, wires, booms, climbing device, derrick ladder, structure, etc.
  • Assist in drill line slip-and-cut program
  • Assist in moving the rig, rigging up and rigging out
  • Assist the Driller and become more familiar with the work of the Driller
  • Assist and train Motorhands, Floorhands and Leasehands as required
  • Assist all other crew members as required, such as the Driller with cleaning and painting, etc.
  • Perform all other duties as instructed by the Driller and/or Rig Manager

Qualifications and Abilities:

  • **MUST HAVE VALID CLASS 1 DRIVERS LICENCE**
  • Must have previous Floorhand, Motorhand and/or Derrickhand work experience on a drilling rig, with preference given to Pre-Set Drilling Rigs.
  • Must have a strong mechanical aptitude
  • Must have a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Must be able to work as part of a team and follow directions
  • Able to work in a fast-paced and physically demanding environment, in all weather conditions
  • Must hold all regulatory safety certificates as required

Working Conditions

  • Hours of operation are 24 hours per day, seven days per week
  • Shift duration is typically 12 hours in length (Day Shift 07:00-19:00; Night shift 19:00-07:00) Hours of work are subject to change and do not include travel to location
  • Work rotations are variable and subject to change
  • Work location is typically remote and subject to frequent change
  • Work is performed outdoors under a variety of weather conditions
  • Work is physically demanding
  • Workers must be comfortable working at height
