Construction Technologist

Location: Peace River, AB

Application Deadline: January 2, 2024

Position: Full-Time

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week

Salary: $70,320 - $92,338 / year  

Role Responsibilities:

  • Technical review of electric utility distribution design packages, including drawings, material take-offs, and calculations.
  • Sealing of electric utility distribution design drawings.
  • Technical mentorship of engineers and technologists.
  • Electrical and civil design of underground and overhead electric utility infrastructure.
  • Material take-offs and project estimating.
  • Voltage drop and transformer loading calculations.
  • Cable pull calculations using Pull Planner.
  • Pole modeling calculations using SPIDAcalc and PLS-CADD.
  • Reviewing engineering consultant drawings such as civil, buildings electrical, landscape, and architectural.
  • Project schedule management and tracking.
  • Research and application of engineering standards and codes.
  • Collaboration with the project team.
  • Design coordination with external clients, engineering consultants, utility approval teams, municipalities, material and construction suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  • Creating design redlines in Bluebeam.
  • Leading continuous improvement initiatives and updating tools, processes, documentation, and automation.
  • Periodic off-site meetings, site visits, and field inspections.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Engineering / Applied Science degree or diploma from a recognized university or college (electrical or civil preferred).
  • P.Eng. or P.L.Eng. designation through EGBC.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the design of electrical utility distribution projects.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop business relationships.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing responsibilities concurrently.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and drive for improvement.
  • Class 5 driver’s license.

Additional Assets:

  • Familiarity with BC Hydro and/or Fortis Electric design and construction standards and tools.
  • Exposure to SPIDAcalc, PLS-CADD, Pull Planner, AutoCAD, or AGi32 software.
  • Project management experience (including PMP designation).
  • Experience working in the shallow utility and/or land development industries.
  • Exposure to electrical distribution, transmission, substations, telecommunications, natural gas, street lighting, traffic signals, civil, buildings electrical, landscape, and/or architectural design.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Experience creating Visual Basic Application (VBA) macros in Microsoft Excel.
