What City Of Edmonton is Hiring for:

Carpenter Apprentice

Location(s): Various Locations in Edmonton (City Wide)

Opening: Up to 1 permanent full-time position.

Salary: $24.882 - $37.323 (Hourly); $51,953.620 - $77,930.420 (Annually).

Hours of Work: 

  • 40 hours per week
  • Monday - Friday.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Journeyperson carpenters in daily tasks, including carrying tools, materials, and equipment, and setting up work areas.
  • Repair, replace, and perform preventative maintenance on structural and architectural building components.
  • Adhere to occupational health, safety, and environmental standards and procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a public environment.
  • Learn about different materials used in facilities and gain an understanding of the procurement process.
  • Provide construction and renovation services.
  • Maintain and repair locks and locking hardware.
  • Move and install walls, replace ceilings and floors, and repair roofs.
  • Build and repair cupboards, cabinets, and various custom millwork.
  • Install and repair tile, linoleum, baseboards, and other flooring materials.
  • Hang doors; install door closers; replace broken or worn locks.
  • Perform miscellaneous service work and renovations.
  • Utilize technology to obtain work order information and record work.

Education

  • Grade 12 with the ability to pass the apprenticeship entrance exam and obtain an Alberta Apprenticeship in Carpentry.

Experience

  • Minimum 2nd year registered apprenticeship in Carpentry with Alberta Apprenticeship Board.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in maintenance or construction.
  • Experience and training in the locksmith trade would be an asset.
  • Experience in cabinet making and interior partition systems would be an asset.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of building construction materials and techniques.
  • Familiarity with regulatory codes such as the Alberta Building Code and Fire Safety Code in the carpentry trade.
  • Ability to work safely with a variety of power tools.
  • Ability to read/interpret blueprints, layout, quantity take-offs for ordering required materials.
  • Commitment to continual learning, teamwork, and providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position and pass a job-related physical abilities evaluation.

Pre-employment

  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton is required.
