What Primary Engineering and Construction is Hiring for:

Distribution Engineer

Location: Burnaby, BC

Application Deadline: December 31, 2023

Pay: Competitive

Responsibilities:

  1. Technical review of electric utility distribution design packages, including drawings, material take-offs, and calculations.
  2. Sealing of electric utility distribution design drawings.
  3. Technical mentorship of engineers and technologists.
  4. Electrical and civil design of underground and overhead electric utility infrastructure.
  5. Material take-offs and project estimating.
  6. Voltage drop and transformer loading calculations.
  7. Cable pull calculations using Pull Planner.
  8. Pole modeling calculations using SPIDAcalc and PLS-CADD.
  9. Reviewing engineering consultant drawings such as civil, buildings electrical, landscape, and architectural to coordinate and eliminate design conflicts.
  10. Project schedule management and tracking.
  11. Research and application of engineering standards and codes.
  12. Collaboration with the project team (project managers, designers, drafters, engineers of record, and field inspectors) to ensure projects are executed successfully.
  13. Design coordination with external clients, engineering consultants, utility approval teams, municipalities, material and construction suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  14. Creating design redlines in Bluebeam.
  15. Leading continuous improvement initiatives and updating tools, processes, documentation, and automation.
  16. Periodic off-site meetings, site visits, and field inspections.

Qualifications:

  • Engineering / Applied Science degree or diploma from a recognized university or college (electrical or civil preferred).
  • P.Eng. or P.L.Eng. designation through EGBC.
  • Class 5 driver’s license.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the design of electrical utility distribution projects.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop business relationships conducted in a professional manner.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing responsibilities concurrently.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and drive for improvement.

Additional Assets:
  • Familiarity with BC Hydro and/or Fortis Electric design and construction standards and tools.
  • Exposure to SPIDAcalc, PLS-CADD, Pull Planner, AutoCAD, or AGi32 software.
  • Project management experience (including PMP designation).
  • Experience working in the shallow utility and/or land development industries.
  • Exposure to electrical distribution, transmission, substations, telecommunications, natural gas, street lighting, traffic signals, civil, buildings electrical, landscape, and/or architectural design.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Experience creating Visual Basic Application (VBA) macros in Microsoft Excel.
