Industry leader Suncor Energy has recently applied for approval to build an oilsands project south of Fort McMurray, Alberta. This project has potential to produce some 40,000 barrels of oil per day.
Application for the Meadow Creek West project was filed Friday, according to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER).
Meadow Creek is a joint venture between Suncor and Nexen Energy ULC with Suncor as the operator.
According to their website, Meadow Creek West will be developed in one stage with an anticipated production of 40,000 barrels (bpd). This, along with the Meadow Creek East facilities will be operational for 40 or more years.
Meadow Creek East is located about 45 km south of the city of Fort McMurray and 20 km southwest of Anzac, while Meadow Creek West is located about 40 km south of Fort McMurray and approximately 35 km southwest of the town of Anzac.
Project facilities for both projects will include central processing plants, cogeneration, well pads, electrical power lines, storage tanks, pipelines and access roads.
Jobs Potential
While Suncor has not specified the number of jobs that may become available, the company promises “nearby communities” will benefit from employment, economic growth and contracting opportunities, revenue and community investment.

A conservation and reclamation plan has also yet to be made, although conceptual reclamation plans are outlined in the applications.
The company says it will research and develop new technologies to reduce the amount of water used and hasten reclamation times for disturbed lands.
