A new project along the banks of the Mississippi River could Create 9,000 direct & indirect jobs with an average salary of $84,500 plus benefits.

Earlier this week, Governor John Bel Edwards and Formosa Petrochemical Corporations announced the company's $9.4 billion facility will be built on a 2,400-acre site along the banks of the Mississippi River.

Located just downriver from the Sunshine Bridge, the "Sunshine Project" is to be built in two phases over the course of about 10 years.

The industrial complex would be constructed in two phases. Once completed, the complex will produce ethylene, propylene, polymer and ethylene glycol that are used to make everyday products including car casings, plastic bottles, grocery bags, drainage pipes, artificial turf, polyester clothing, antifreeze and playground equipment.

Construction could begin as soon as 2019.

A release from the governor's office says the Sunshine Project would create 1,200 new direct jobs averaging $84,500, plus benefits. Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project also would result in 8,000 new indirect jobs, for a total of more than 9,000 jobs in the River Parishes and surrounding regions of Louisiana.
