A forecast released by the Petroleum Services Association of Canada on Monday predicts that drilling will pick up at a faster pace than previously expected, and largely in Alberta. The report indicates this is largely due to improved energy prices.

Canada wide, 5,200 wells are expected to be drilled - an increase of almost 1000 wells based on their same report done in November of 2016.

Alberta the Hot Spot

The majority of this increased drilling activity is expected to take place in Alberta. Up an impressive 40 present based on November 2016's forecast, it is expected that Alberta will drill for 2,700 new wells this year.

Many major companies in Alberta such as CEDA, Suncor, Clearstream & National Oilwell Varco have all posted several open jobs this year, and still have many available.

While Alberta is not expected to 'boom' as in previous years, some hiring woes persist. Many experienced drillers and frackers have left the province 0 and the industry - to find more stable employment.

Increased Efficiencies

While producers enjoy the benefits of improved energy prices, oilfield service companies find themselves in tougher positions. Many of these service companies are not getting the rates they once used to. However, new royalty deals encourage producers to cut costs and become more efficient, so it is not likely that inflated service fees will be returning any time soon.
