The Drilling Superintendent oversees and supports drilling operations for multiple rigs in an assigned area. In this role, the Drilling Superintendent will be accountable for setting expectations and managing performance of Rig Managers and their assigned rigs.  This will include conducting rig inspections and managing rig performance, leading and developing a talented workforce, building and maintaining relationships with internal and external customers, partnering with cross functional teams and support groups and executing on Company strategies and objectives to deliver operational excellence and a safe work environment.

This role performs under the direction of the Operations Manager

Detailed Description

  • Manage both internal and external customer relationships to ensure needs are consistently and timely met
  • Identify, lead, manage and develop Rig Managers to Company performance standards and to ensure the same level of development is cascaded throughout their teams
  • Set goals and expectations for individuals and teams, deliver performance reviews and implement development and/or improvement plans as needed
  • Partner with Human Resources and Operations Manager to make employment decisions in a manner consistent with all Company policies, including the Company’s Equal Employment Opportunity and Anti-Harassment Policy
  • Participate in interviews as appropriate for prospective new hires consistent with Company processes, guidelines and values
  • Promote a diverse and inclusive work environment where employees of all backgrounds feel included and their contributions are valued
  • Promptly address and resolve concerns and disputes among team members and customers with the goal of building a stronger, more cohesive work group
  • Demonstrate and communicate the company’s vision, core values, policies and procedures to Rig Managers and crews and ensure compliance
  • Ensure the sourcing, procurement, and delivery of supplies, equipment, materials and services for rigs are executed in accordance with corporate Supply Chain strategy
  • Manage and execute on Company strategy for asset management, maintenance, inventory and overall asset integrity
  • Conduct onsite rig inspections and follow-up reviews to ensure a safe work environment, proper maintenance of equipment, availability of critical spares and effective employee engagement
  • Conduct and manage incident investigations and coordinate appropriate corrective   actions to achieve sustainable results
  • Serve as a primary contact to respond to issues or emergencies that may arise on a rig
  • Partner with Marketing Department to proactively understand  contract requirements for each rig and to ensure contract execution and performance
  • Responsible for quality, accuracy and timely reporting to include internal Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for PTEN+ and other metrics such as EBITA, TRIR, NPT, Daily Rig Margin, Repair and Maintenance costs, employee turnover as well as other HR information and documentation with the highest level of integrity
  • Manage full lifecycle projects to include timelines, resources, budgets and cost for daily rig operations as well as rig upgrade projects and capital expenditures
  • Make sound and  timely decisions and provide support to rigs as needed to ensure efficient operations, customer satisfaction and to minimize down time while maintaining a  continuously safe working environment

Job Requirements

  • Analyze data, develop presentations and deliver technical information and KPI’s in a clear and concise manner to internal and external customers
  • Proficient computer skills to include MS Office Suite and other business systems such as Oracle, Pason, and the internal Management System, as well as use of smart phones, laptops and tablets
  • Ability to utilize basic math calculations and formulas with an understanding of order of operations

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of operational experience working for a drilling contractor or closely related services
  • 3+ years of experience in a management / leadership position
  • Eligible to drive Company or personal vehicle for business purposes including ability to meet requirements of Company’s Vehicle Use Agreement and Driving Policy
  • May be required to relocate to the assigned area or currently reside within a 2 hour driving distance to the area office

Required Certifications

  • IADC’s accredited WellSharp – Supervisor level course

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Engineering or related field
  • 2+ years of experience managing multiple rigs in an assigned region or area

Additional Details

Work Environment

  • This position requires work both indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions, including precipitation, cold / heat, high wind, and turbulent conditions.  The Superintendent will be regularly exposed to the typical conditions of the local area where the rig is located
  • The Superintendent must work with an emphasis on safety for themselves and others including coworkers and third parties.  They must be able to work closely with others assigned to the drilling rig under time-sensitive deadlines including potential emergency response situations. They must be willing to work extended schedules that will include working days; and occasionally nights, weekends and holidays
  • Frequent travel to other Company offices and drilling rig work sites, often in remote locations, is required during normal rig operating conditions (day/night, outdoor hot/cold weather), and employee will be expected to properly use designated personal protective equipment (PPE)
