The Lead Application Engineer will provide objective performance analytics and drive optimization initiatives for MS Directional, LLC and its customers.  The candidate will use vast arrays of drilling data to analyze and synthesize key information, use this information to provide optimization proposals to our external customers and internal operations teams and engage all appropriate stakeholders to optimize our directional drilling services.  The candidate will assess and propose optimized solutions of wellbore design, bottom hole assemblies (BHAs) to maximize performance objectives and component life, and drilling parameters to improve overall drilling rates for our customers.  In collaboration with Operations and Sales, the candidate will deliver proposals to clients and when appropriate train operations teams on changes to improve clients’ drilling performance. 

The Lead Application Engineer will be focused on working directly with MSD Operations, Engineering, Sales, and the customer to improve key performance indicators (KPIs); coaching and mentoring more junior engineers; monitoring and analyzing drilling data; developing new reports and visualizations; supporting the drilling operations team and driving overall operational excellence and a safe work environment. Providing enhanced and optimized drilling solutions to our customers will improve the customer’s drilling program parameters, which will assist in driving our operational tool performance. 

The successful candidate will work well in many disparate environments—having strong presentation skills and interacting professionally with our customers, managing their expectations, and applying advanced data analytics in innovative ways. They would also be self-motivated with the ability to take the lead on projects with minimal oversight or guidance.  We are looking for energetic, passionate, and focused candidates who can develop into the future leadership of MS Directional.

This role performs under the general direction of the Engineering Manager.

Detailed Description:

  • Interface directly with all stakeholders, both internally and externally, to act as a central driver for performance optimization initiatives for customers’ drilling programs as well as for MS Directional tools and equipment.
  • Review, analyze, and manage drilling data to propose improved drilling parameters, identify areas to enhance performance, and aid in tool forensic analysis while continuing to focus on quality and safety.
  • Partner with Operations and Sales to propose and communicate enhanced solutions and performance initiatives internally and externally.
  • Manage and aid in the preparation of performance reviews for key customers and present directly to customers at their facility
  • Assist the Sales and Operations teams with technical sales support of MSD products and services
  • Work directly with the customer at varying levels of their organization, coordinate and align with their own goals and performance initiatives and respond to requests for data and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assist with the development of a company-wide repository of best practices and process improvement documents.
  • Review, recommend and apply new technology where appropriate.
  • Analyze large datasets and develop drilling visuals and reports in software tools like Tableau, Spotfire, Power BI etc. to effectively communicate critical information to all stakeholders.
  • Provide appropriate professional mentorship and technical guidance levels for less experienced team members.

Job Requirements

  • Able to meticulously learn the details of our customers’ drilling programs and our business quickly
  • Build engaging relationships at all levels of the organization as well as with customers
  • Work effectively with multiple divisions within the organization, including Operations, Sales, and Engineering
  • Analyze complex programs and processes and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Able to think strategically and translate concepts into action plans and track results
  • Able to analyze data captured through methods such as EDR, MSD drilling software, etc.. and apply it to MSD products and processes to provide optimized performance drilling solutions
  • Able to manage and confront challenging situations, make difficult decisions, and deliver messages with professionalism
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously to meet challenging deadlines
  • Simplify and explain complex topics for the purposes of coaching and training
  • Proficient in utilizing advanced logical and mathematic calculations
  • Excellent verbal and written English Language communication with employees, customers, and third parties at all levels
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office Suite and other business operations systems such as Innova, Power BI, and Electronic Drilling Recorder. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Direct experience associated with downhole tools and drilling data analytics
  • 5+ years of drilling engineering experience
  • Fluent in the use of EDR and other systems used for drilling performance analysis
  • Eligible to drive Company or personal vehicle for Company purposes including the ability to meet requirements of the Company’s Vehicle Use Agreement and Driving Policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Mechanical or Petroleum engineering degree
  • 10+ years of experience working in the oilfield service industry
  • Experience with supplementary optimization analyses such as Torque & Drag, Hydraulics, BHA modeling, MSE calculations, etc..

Work Environment

This position requires the person to be able to work in a time-sensitive, high-visibility role and regularly travel as needed to visit and/or support business units, clients, and work sites.  Some extended travel may be required to remote locations and/or overnight stay(s).  The person must work with an emphasis on planning, multi-tasking, and prioritizing to maximize the efficiency of the team. The person must be able to work both independently and closely with others and manage customer interaction in a positive and professional manner. They must safely navigate work sites by walking, climbing, standing, stepping, etc., during normal operating conditions (e.g. day/night, outdoor hot/cold weather, etc.) while utilizing designated personal protective equipment (PPE), and be able to lift at least 50 pounds of weight. They must be able to actively manage the dynamics of a 24/7 operation.
