Position and Responsibilities

Working with the McArthur River team, as a Geotechnical Engineer you will be responsible for providing expertise and applying geotechnical principles to underground mine designs. Support of full geotechnical scope, from concept level to detailed design and construction, with the requirement to liaise with other technical staff and mine operations. This is a critical role in our mine engineering team.

 You will bring strong experience in geotechnical engineering design and analysis to this position. In support of these activities, you will be responsible to:

  • Provide geotechnical leadership to junior members of the Mine Engineering team
  • Assist the Chief Mine Engineer with geotechnical reviews and risk assessments of the mine plans to ensure that mine layouts and mining sequence are optimized to reduce the risk to safety and production
  • Oversee ground support and backfill designs/standards, and quality control programs
  • Oversee design of underground drifts, chambers and stopes using analytical and numerical tools for stability analysis
  • Lead geotechnical inspections of underground work areas, including geotechnical data collection (MPBX readings, closure stations) and testing (pull tests)
  • Geotechnical applications, ranging from field mapping, geotechnical core logging, and rock mass characterization to rock stability assessment and ground support design
  • Preparation of geotechnical reports and coordination of third-party audits and develop action plans to address recommendations
  • Network with geotechnical staff from other Cameco operations and Corporate

Requirements of the position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in geological, geotechnical or mine engineering
  • 4-8 years of relevant ground support engineering and design experience in an underground mining environment
  • Equivalent combination of education and work experience considered
  • Solid understanding of rock mechanics
  • You must be eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS)
  • Significant field experience in geotechnical logging, mapping and rock mass characterization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills, and technical writing
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Work a rotational schedule and commute to site by aircraft

Assets:

  • Familiarity with development and support methods for weak rock development and tunnelling
  • Familiarity with geotechnical design software, skills in ground support design and 2D/3D geotechnical numerical modelling
  • Experience in hydrogeology and backfill
  • Proficiency with 3D mine design software (Vulcan)
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD, Excel, Access, PowerPoint
