Anyone who is, has been, or wants to be employed in the oil and gas industry knows (or at least should know) that drug tests are a part of the job – they are typically required upon offer of employment, are always required after any sort of infraction or workplace incident, and are even commonly done on random.

It only makes sense that employers would place such a high level of importance on drug tests to reduce the risk of employing those influenced by drugs or alcohol.

Not only do these tests aid in mitigating the various risks associated with having drug or alcohol abusers in the workplace, but they also help ensure that workplace safety and productivity maintain high standards. Of course there are a variety of drug tests that are common throughout the industry, but one specific test that has long been a go-to for many companies involved in oil and gas is the DISA test.

If you are currently employed in, or looking to be employed in, the oil and gas industry, you will want to know what the DISA test is – and why your current or future employers enforce such tests so strictly.

Who Is DISA?

DISA is a Houston, Texas based company specializing in workplace safety and compliance services. They have over 30 years worth of experience in the industry and are known for their high standards, excellent service, and quality products. They offer a variety of compliance services, including drug and alcohol testing, background screening, and qualification filing, as well as different safety or substance abuse training programs.

What Is A DISA Test?

There are a number of tests that DISA offers, but the most popular are those used to test for the presence of drugs or alcohol in one’s system. The most common tests used by various employers across the country are: urine testing, hair testing, oral fluid testing, and evidential breath alcohol testing (EBAT).

Urine Testing

Of these four, urine testing is the most common. Urine testing shows the presence (or absence) of drug metabolites in a person’s urine. Drug metabolites are residues left behind in the body for a specified period of time (depending on the drug) after a person has used – even after the effects of the drug have worn off. These tests can screen for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, PCP, opiates, and more.

Hair Testing

Hair testing is used to detect repeat use, as it can detect repeat drug use for up to a 90-day time frame. This test can even detect when the drug was used, how long it was used for, and when use was discontinued. This test simply requires a small hair sample and like urine tests, can recognize usage of marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, PCP, and opiates.

Oral Fluid Testing

In simpler terms: mouth swabbing. These tests take samples of one’s saliva in order to determine recent drug use – anywhere from a few minutes prior up to 48 hours prior to testing. This time frame makes these tests useful for a variety of situations, such as on site after an incident.

EBAT

These tests are used specifically for alcohol use and, unlike the previously mentioned drug tests, are only capable of showing current levels of impairment or intoxication but not past use. This test requires the subject to blow into a Breathalyzer, where results are shown immediately.

Why Are These Tests So Important?

Not only do these drug tests help companies hire the best possible candidates for the job, they also enable companies to keep high quality work environments, productivity, and workplace safety.

It is convenient for anyone currently employed in the field, or those of you seeking employment in the field, to be aware of how common, and how important, these DISA tests are – especially considering large companies like Halliburton require them.

If you want to keep your job safe, and your overall health for that matter, refrain from drug or alcohol use – not only while your on shift but at all times. You will pass your DISA tests and be on your way to a healthy and happy career in the oilfield!
